“WHY SHOULD I LEARN VOCAL TECHNIQUE?”

Vocal technique is a set of guidelines that keep a singer on a path to consistent vocal production and health.  The singer that implements this technique will also enjoy continuing overall improvements, including better tone, resonance, range, power, agility and personal artistry.   It is key to vocal health and stamina, ensuring a more dependable and performance-ready voice.

Many of you may be thinking “shouldn’t a real singer just …sing?  Shouldn’t it come naturally?  I bet Aretha Franklin never took a vocal training course.”  Well there is a chance that some of your favorite, most influential singers never took a voice lesson, and wouldn’t have seen the need to.  Those rare few are called “Natural Singers.”  But I promise you that many of the top-selling artists in every genre, from country to prog rock, that you may think are totally self-taught, or even say that they are…have studied technique, and taken voice lessons with a pro.  I know this because I have taught, and continue to teach many of them.  Some I’ve worked for since before they were famous, some are sent to me by their producers to work on phrasing or range, and others come to me when they run into vocal trouble while touring…like fatigue, tension or even nodules.

For the professional singers, whether established or aspiring, learning and practicing solid singing technique is the absolute best way to ensure that your voice holds up through your tours and long hours in the studio, preventing fatigue and other serious career-threatening vocal issues.
